Did you know that every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports well over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe – making it the world’s largest funding organisation of its kind?

This scholarship covers everything you need for your post-graduate program starting from your tuition fees, visa fee, flat rate allowance for your flight ticket, two months of german classes prior to the start of your program, assistance in getting your student accommodation, a monthly stipend of € 861 for masters level and € 1,200 for doctoral/PhD student. They also provide you with health, accident and personal liability insurance and for the PhD students, a one-off research allowance and family benefits.

All these say one thing; ”Focus on your studies and get the best grade and experience possible, while we take care of you”. This is definitely a big deal especially for students from developing countries who may need to break an arm and a leg to afford to study abroad. Well, now that you have know more about the DAAD Scholarship, let’s show you a guide on how to get it;

  • There is no age limit for the scholarship. Hence, your age does not stand as a qualifying factor.
  • You can apply in your last year of study (Bachelors or masters). As long as you meet all the academic requirements set out in the call for applications by the time your funding period begins. You will also need to submit your certificate by that time.
  • Your country of origin is important for your application so ensure that your country of origin and Nationality is in line with the requirements for the scholarship.

  • You will mostly not be allowed to work more than a specific number of hours and your income from the job should not exceed 450 € per month. If you wish to work part-time during your scholarship period, note that you require the approval of DAAD. Your academic supervisor or course coordinator must also give their consent. DAAD will verify that the part-time employment does not interfere with the purpose of the scholarship. Additional, if the income exceeds € 450 gross per month, it shall be deducted from the monthly scholarship payment.
  • You should have at least 2 years work experience in the intended field. You will need a professional reference to prove this.
  • You should have a grade of 2:1 and above in your previous degree.
  • You should be able to prove your proficiency in the language of instruction. This can be through IELTS (best to have this) or an English proficiency letter from your University. This letter might not be accepted by all programs so confirm before you opt for this.
